The Vitra Eames Elephant Plywood
In the early 1940s, designers Charles and Ray Eames refined plywood molding and used this three-dimensional technique to create furniture and sculptures. Among the early designs is the elephant, whose design was too sophisticated for mass production in 1945 due to its opposing and narrow curves. The prototype was a gift to the then 14-year-old Lucia Eames, Charles' daughter from his first marriage. The elephant was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. Today it is owned by the Eames Office.
The Eames Elephant as an attractive object
The manufacturer Vitra first brought the beautiful elephant onto the market in 2007 in a limited edition. Since 2017, the Eames Elephant Plywood has been available with a high-quality face veneer of American cherry as a decorative object. The elegant wooden article fits in the living room and other representative rooms. Originally these living room accessories were intended as toys for children, but now the popular article is also available in the pro office store.
The Eames Elephant for children
Slightly smaller but in the same scale, the Eames Elephant is designed for children, the Elephant (small) in different colors. The robust plastic toy is suitable for the children's room as well as outdoor and makes many eyes shine.
The designers Charles and Ray Eames
The designers Charles (1907-1978) and Ray Eames (1912-1988) stand for Midcentury Design like no other married couple; they shaped the entire era with their sensational designs. The Plywood Group was later joined by the Fiberglass Group, the Wire Chair and the Aluminium Group, chairs that also stand in the conference hall of the Federal Chancellery. One of the most famous Eames designs is the Lounge Chair with stool (Ottoman); this and many other Eames products can also be found in the pro office store.
