He sees himself as an architect, who adapts product design to the space itself. The space should always provide the basis for its design. He is active in many areas of design. For example, he designs shelves, chairs, beds, bathrooms or kitchen facilities. Since 1999 he has taught at various universities and academies in Switzerland, Milan and Rome. Citterio collaborates with many well-known international residential designers, including Kartell and Vitra. In 2002, he was named "Designer of the Year" and a few years later he was appointed "Royal Designer for Industry" in England. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Italian Design Council.
