The company's history
When the company was founded in 1949, the chemical engineer Giulio Castelli was already focused on innovation. With plastics he chose a material that was modern at the time. His interest originally lay not in furniture and accessories at all: at first he wanted Kartell to produce laboratory equipment and car accessories in plastic.
Furniture as a second line of business
Kartell established a second line of business early on with the production of furniture. Castelli recognised the potential of the material and worked with respected designers from the outset. Numerous design awards and inclusion in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York confirmed that Kartell furniture had established itself internationally in form and design.
Lighting and accessories
Today Kartell produces not only furniture but also lighting and numerous household objects. What they share is the material. It is developed and tested further in the company's own laboratories, in order to give it new properties and achieve consistent quality.
Design
Part of Kartell's ongoing development is its work with established designers as well as with new talent. This keeps the creative process in motion and takes up new impulses.
Even so, Kartell furniture is meant to serve a purpose, and that purpose is central. Kartell understands a piece of furniture or a household object as a complete work: form, colour and design should be in harmony with practical use and functionality.
