However, the two founders of the company have also made their contribution to this. After all, it was Friedrich Hahne and Christian Wilkening who founded the company in 1907. The name Wilkhahn is the fusion of the two names and also an icon in the field of office and conference furniture.

The path to design - How Wilkhahn set itself apart from the competition

However, at the beginning there was no sign of this. Wilkhahn was founded as one chair manufacturer among many and built solid beechwood chairs. Certainly, the quality at Wilkhahn was right and so were sales, but the two sons of the company founders recognized in the mid-1940s that only those who stand out from the crowd can achieve long-term success.

Wilkhahn office chairs - vision and innovation

Thus, new visions were developed at Wilkhahn and it was discovered that, in addition to the practicality of seating furniture, design is also a not insignificant factor. Thus, Wilkhahn tried to set new design accents and give the furniture its own face. Wilkhahn's collaboration with the Deutsche Werkstätten and the associated closeness to the Bauhaus style were decisive in this respect. This made Wilkhahn one of the pioneers in the field of industrial design. People at Wilkhahn experimented with new materials and created previously unheard-of designs that resulted from the practicality of the furniture.

During this time, a rather purist design line emerged at Wilkhahn, whose design incorporated their proximity to industrial design and practicality.
It was also thanks to this period and the unbelievable willingness of the young designers to experiment that revolutionary products and designs were created at Wilkhahn. New standards were thus set - but Wilkhahn also remembered its responsibility for ecology and sustainability, which is why Wilkhahn produces chairs that are practically indestructible and hard to beat in terms of durability. High value stability through high-quality manufacturing techniques and materials is just as much a part of this Wilkhahn concept as the commitment to Germany as a manufacturing location.
