Artemide – light in its finest form
People have five senses, and visual perception is a particularly formative one among them. A large part of our impressions reaches us through the eyes – and light is decisive for that.
Lighting and lighting concepts influence our perception. They help determine whether a room or an individual element appears in the right light or seems cold and unwelcoming.
Artemide's company philosophy goes beyond lighting, because producing light requires little more than a light source. At Artemide, lighting is combined with a distinctive design approach, creating luminaires that become a focal point.
Artemide can look back on a long tradition: the company was founded near Milan in 1960 by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza, and it is still run from there today. The Artemide Group is now a holding company that includes Artemide, the France-based Nord Light and the Artemide Architectural Division.
Artemide luminaires are distributed internationally. The company invests in lighting technology and light control, which feed into its designs, resulting in modern, design-led luminaires.
The Human Light – people at the centre
At the heart of the company philosophy is neither the luminaire nor the design, but the person. Artemide's designers aim to adapt light and its effect to people and their situations, producing distinctive lighting concepts and luminaire designs.
A room should be lit in a way that suits the people in it and what they are doing there. This principle is fundamental to "The Human Light", Artemide's guiding approach.
Luminaires for living and working areas
The luminaires can be used indoors and outdoors. The focus is on interiors, but with a dedicated outdoor lighting line the range also suits gardens and outdoor areas. What convinces here is not only the design but also the standard of weather resistance and technical execution. Outdoor areas can be more than merely lit: with floor lamps, ground luminaires and outdoor wall and ceiling lights, a lighting scheme of its own can be created.
Quality is one of the hallmarks of Artemide luminaires – outdoors as well as indoors. The range includes ceiling lights, pendant lights, wall, floor and table lamps.
Designers
Numerous designers have created luminaires for Artemide, among them Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina, Karim Rashid, Richard Sapper, Neil Poulton, Ross Lovegrove and many others.

About the Artemide Tolomeo luminaires
The Artemide Tolomeo Tavolo luminaires have distinctive features: the conical shade and the pared-back aluminium appearance. Artemide has maintained the product family since 1987 and continues to develop it.
There is now a wide variety of model ranges, special editions and versions for different applications. Quality and design have made the Tolomeo family popular for more than 30 years.
Among the best-known models are the Artemide Tolomeo Tavolo with LED lighting, the Artemide Mega and the Artemide Tizio table lamps. For a small workspace, the Tolomeo Micro or Mini is well suited, while the Tolomeo Pinza serves as a clamp lamp.

Designers of the Tolomeo
Giancarlo Fassina and Michele De Lucchi designed the Artemide Tolomeo in 1987, a few years after De Lucchi had co-founded the Memphis design movement together with Ettore Sottsass and others.
Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina
The 1980s were marked by De Lucchi's work for industry and his designs for companies such as Artemide, Siemens, Philips, Vitra and Olivetti. For the mechanical element of the Tolomeo, De Lucchi drew inspiration from the fishing structures known as trabucchi. Common along the Adriatic coast, these consist of poles to which a net is attached, held by ropes. This principle is echoed in the construction of the Tolomeo.
With the Tolomeo, De Lucchi and Fassina created a luminaire that is popular in office and domestic interiors alike. Its continuous adjustment makes it a practical desk lamp, while different mounting options and model versions cover many applications. The designers received the Compasso d'Oro for the Tolomeo, among other awards.
Technology
Artemide works with LED technology and the further development of light control. Compared with halogen, LED light sources consume less electricity and have a longer service life. Specific figures on energy efficiency class, luminous flux and service life can be found with the individual products.
Artemide's philosophy places people and their need for good light at the centre. The luminaires are developed with light quality for different applications in mind.
