FAQs
A design classic is one that has retained its aesthetic and functional relevance over a long period of time. In addition to a distinctive design language, its characteristics often include an innovative construction, a significant influence on design history, and continuous production by an authorised manufacturer.
An authorised reissue is produced by a legitimate manufacturer with the consent of the designers or their rights holders. It is based on the original design but may be adapted to modern materials, manufacturing processes or safety requirements in consultation with the rights holders.
Even a piece of furniture manufactured today can be considered an original, provided it is produced by an authorised manufacturer in accordance with the legitimate design. The age of the piece of furniture is not a determining factor in this respect. Nevertheless, a contemporary authorised edition must be distinguished from a historical original dating from the period in which it was first created.
Many manufacturers offer spare parts, care instructions or their own repair services. Depending on the model and condition, elements such as the wickerwork, covers, upholstery or finishes can be replaced. A professional restoration can extend the product’s lifespan and preserve the design’s aesthetic integrity.
Design classics may remain in demand in the long term, but an increase in value cannot be guaranteed. The market value depends, amongst other things, on the manufacturer, model, version, age, condition, proof of provenance and current demand. When deciding whether to buy, therefore, the focus should be on practical use and design quality.
