"Thonet S 43 H bar stool"
Design: Mart Stam
Thonet S 43 H bar stool
High up with the tubular steel classic S 43 designed by Mart Stam: This bar stool comes without rear legs. The furniture expresses understatement with high quality and low resource consumption. The straight shape and the tubular steel frame with the molded wood parts of the chairs come from the Bauhaus period, which ushered in the spirit of modernism. More than 70 years later, the manufacturer THONET follows up and presents the cantilever chair as a bar stool. The Thonet S 43 chair has been in Leipzig since the 1930s in the Natural Sciences Reading Room of the German National Library. Almost only the legendary chair made of tubular steel is as durable.
The designer Mart Stam (1899 -1986)
The Dutchman Mart Stam designed the first functional cantilever chair, which was first exhibited in 1927 in the Stuttgart Weißenhofsiedlung. The light chair was in complete contrast to the heavy armchair in the living room, which was common at the time. In 1935, the architect returned to the Netherlands, where he was appointed director of the Institute for Arts and Crafts Education in Amsterdam in 1939. After the war, the designer initially moved back to Germany and worked in Dresden and Berlin at the respective colleges of arts. In 1955, he returned to the Netherlands and lived in Switzerland as a retiree. The artistic copyright of the cantilever chairs is now held by THONET.
