The origin of tubular steel furniture - Bauhaus

Tubular steel furniture originated in the Bauhaus movement of the 1920s. Generally, designer Marcel Breuer is considered the inventor of tubular steel furniture. In 1925, he had the idea to build an armchair out of tubular steel. Then in 1926 the armchair "Wassily" was presented to the public. Breuer thus became one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. In the 1930s, he created more tubular steel furniture and designs made of aluminum and plywood. In the course of his career he was involved in the furnishing of Gropius' Meisterhaus in Dresden. He also furnished the apartment for the theater director Erwin Piscator. In 1932 a second career as an architect developed, with the project es Haus Harnischmacher in Wiesbaden. In 1937 Breuer moved to the USA. After that, he initially designed single-family houses and villas. One of his largest projects was the design of the Unesco headquarters in Paris from 1955 to 1958. With his designs and designs Marcel Breuer is today considered the inventor of tubular steel furniture. Other pioneers of tubular steel furniture include Mart Star and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who incorporated their own unique ideas and innovations. Thonet

ClassiCon

ClassiCon is a young company, which was founded in 1990. The comparatively young company is dedicated to forgotten design classics, often from the Bauhaus times of the 1920s and 1930s. At the same time, contemporary designers are also promoted. This results in an exciting catalog of modern and classic designs.

One example of a classic at ClassiCon is the Occasional Table, which was designed by designer Eileen Gray in the 1920s. This tubular steel side table is designed to be functional. Knoll

The company Knoll International was founded in 1938 in the USA, but looks back on a company history that began as early as 1865 in Stuttgart with a leather store. To this day, Knoll produces Bauhaus classics, by designers such as Marcel Breuer.

The chair that laid the foundations for tubular steel furniture back then was the Wassily chair. Marcel Breuer designed this chair in 1925 and presented it to the public the following year. USM

The modular construction principle of USM furniture was not initially intended for building furniture at all. Swiss architect Fritz Haller designed a simple building principle consisting of three structural components: a sphere, a tube and a surface. This was intended to be used as a modular blueprint that would help in planning the new construction of USM's corporate headquarters. Instead, the ingenious concept of USM Haller's modular, cubic furniture systems came about quite by accident.

The spheres in the structure function as connectors between the tubes. They have up to six holes into which the supporting steel tubes are installed. The surfaces can then be inserted between them. This ingenious concept makes USM Haller furniture flexible and adaptable. Products such as shelves, chests of drawers and cabinets can be adapted to any surface and can be used in many situations and places in the home.
