Timeless – the Thonet chair S64
The design of the S 32 and S 64 chairs is among the best-known tubular steel classics. Here constructive form meets the aesthetic combination of wood, tubular steel and cane weave. The chair has its origins in the late 1920s, at a time when Marcel Breuer was designing large interiors and creating numerous pieces of furniture. Production began in 1930. Clarity and aesthetic reduction make the chair suitable for conference rooms, waiting areas, restaurants, bars and private interiors.

Variety
The frame is chrome-plated but is also available in colour-lacquered versions. The wooden parts are stained (beech). The seat and back consist of cane weave combined with a stable, transparent plastic support. Many further combinations with fabrics, leather and the Pure Materials version are possible. Designer
Marcel Breuer was born in Hungary in 1902. From 1920 to 1924 he studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar. From 1925 he headed the Bauhaus carpentry workshop. Breuer was a pioneer in the field of tubular steel furniture, experimenting with designs of this type in the 1920s and creating influential models. The development of the S 32/S 64 fell in the period when Breuer was working as an interior designer in Berlin. In the early 1930s he turned to the design of aluminium furniture. In the mid-1930s he worked as an architect in London. He was appointed professor at Harvard University in Cambridge and opened an architectural practice together with Walter Gropius. From 1946 onwards, numerous designs for Europe and the USA followed. The architect and designer died in New York in 1981.

The manufacturer
The company has been producing furniture since 1819, making it one of the oldest family-run furniture manufacturers worldwide. Drawing on its deep roots in tradition, Thonet repeatedly ventures into new territory. Design and technical developments have made the company known internationally. Its design history includes milestones of the furniture industry such as the coffee house chair No. 14 and the tubular steel furniture.
