The chair
With the tubular steel classic S 43, Mart Stam focused on clean lines, aesthetic economy and seating comfort. Stam combined the tubular steel frame with moulded wood shells for the seat and back, giving the chair its distinctive appearance. Upholstery is not required thanks to the springing effect of the frame. The Thonet S 43 is an exemplary modernist design, clear and restrained in form.
Designer Mart Stam
...was a pioneer in the field of modern furniture design. Born in Purmerend in the Netherlands in 1899, Mart Stam is regarded today as one of the most significant architects of the modern era. His architectural contribution to the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart caused a stir in 1927. After teaching and working as an architect in Frankfurt am Main, he worked in Russia and other countries from 1930 to 1934. He then practised as an architect in Amsterdam until 1948. In 1950 he took up the post of director at the academy of applied arts in Berlin. In 1977 Mart Stam moved to Switzerland, where he died in Goldbach on 23 February 1986. He designed the Thonet chair S 43 in 1931. The copyright for the chair is held today by Thonet.
As a manufacturer, Thonet places particular emphasis on quality and testing procedures. In 1933 the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig was furnished with chairs of the model S 43 F. Because of the Second World War and the founding of the German Democratic Republic, the seating could neither be replaced nor added to. After the inner-German border opened, Thonet was commissioned to supply further chairs. More than 70 years after the original delivery, Thonet supplied the S 43 cantilever chair again.
Versions
The S 43 is available with and without armrests. The tubular steel frame comes chrome-plated, in stainless steel or colour-lacquered. The moulded wood components in natural beech, stained beech, textured lacquer or top-coat lacquer complete the range of finishes. The wooden elements are available in top-coat lacquer in pure white, tomato red and deep black. Textured lacquer is available in pure white, agate grey, anthracite grey and black. On request, the S 43 chairs are also available stackable in the version without armrests.
