The chair
In the S 43 steel pipe classic, Mart Stam set its sights on straightforward shape as well as on aesthetic economy and improved seat comfort. Mart Stam combined the steel tube frame with molded wood shells for the seat and back, giving it its elegant and unique appearance. The upholstery of the chair can be dispensed with by the pleasant swinging effect of the frame. The Thonet S43 is an exemplary design of modernity, clear and reserved in its form.
Designer Mart Stam
... was a pioneer in the field of modern furniture design. Born in Purmerend, Netherlands, in 1899, Mart Stam is now regarded as one of the most important architects of modern times. With his architectural contribution to the Weißenhof settlement in Stuttgart, he made a good start with the experiment of steel tube 1927. After working as a lecturer and working as an architect in Frankfurt am Main, he worked in Russia and other countries from 1930-34. In Amsterdam, he worked as an architect until 1948. In 1950 he took the position of director at the Berlin School of Applied Arts. In 1977 Mart Stam moved to Switzerland. There he died on 23 February 1986 in Goldbach. He designed the Thonet chair S 43 in 1931. The copyright for the chair is now at Thonet.
Sustainabilty
As a manufacturer, Thonet attaches great importance to quality and sustainability. The Thonet cantilever is the best example of the fulfillment of these demands. In 1933, the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek in Leipzig was equipped with chairs of the S 43 F model. Due to the Second World War and the foundation of the German Democratic Republic, the seating could neither be replaced nor supplemented. After opening the borders in Germany, the manufacturer Thonet was commissioned with the delivery of the chairs. After more than 70 years, Thonet returned the Cantilever S 43. An example of quality and sustainability.
