Since the beginning of 2024, the seat shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs have been made from a special material: recycled post-consumer plastic. The source of this recycled material is new - it comes from the German household recycling collection "Gelber Sack", mainly from used packaging. It reduces climate-damaging emissions compared to conventional plastic and uses significantly less energy. Another characteristic aspect of the new seat shells are the delicate speckles in different colors that arise due to the composition of the recycled material.

Eames DAR - Chair with a system
1948, New York. Charles Eames presents one of the first plastic chairs in the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition. The Plastic Armchair DAR now uses the plastic chairs as a modular concept in its production. As the basic elements of this system, each chair consists of a seat shell and an underframe. The shape of the seat shell of the DAR model also accommodates the armrests. The subordinate consists of maple wood and metal bracing. These are available both chrome-plated and black powder-coated.
Plastic Armchairs
The original development provides a polyester resin seat shell. Using this material, started the production of Plastic Chairs. The success of the first series-produced plastic chairs started from there. The manufacturer Vitra brought the production of plastic chairs to Europe and produced the legendary chairs to this day. In 1999 Vitra began the production of plastic chairs from a new material. After the manufacturer discontinued production with polyester resin in 1993, the use of the more ecological and recyclable polypropylene for the seat shells could be introduced and the production re-recorded.
The designer couple
Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames are among the most important designers of the 20th century. When Charles and Designer Eero Saarinnen won the first awards for their designs within the "Organic Furniture Competition" at the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, Ray already assisted in working with bendable wood. There the two met and married in 1941. The success story of the designer couple followed. In addition to the furniture design, they also acted in architecture, photography, video and much more.
Eyecatcher with countless combinations
The design of the Plastic Armchair DAR is timelessly elegant, classic and modern. The variations are manifold. There are different colors for the seat shell to choose from. The Hopsak seat cover and the full upholstery are available in various colors as an option. The braces of the underframe are available in a chromium-plated version, as well as optionally with a black powder coating. The comprehensive possibility of individualization makes the Plastic Armchair DAR a designer look in many environments.

In the Pro Office Shop you get the original. The manufacturer from Wheil am Rhein is the only legitimate producer of the Plastic Armchair DAR for Europe and the Middle East.
The manufacturer offers the Plastic Armchairs at a new height of 43cm since the average body size has increased by 10cm since the 50s.
Care
The plastic surfaces can be cleaned with a soft damp cloth and a neutral detergent. To remove dust and lint from fabric covers, we recommend vacuuming. Stains on seat covers and undercuts can be cleaned, like the plastic surfaces, with a neutral detergent and a soft damp cloth.
