Vitra Eames DSW – the multifunctional Eames chair
Note: since the beginning of 2024 the seat shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs have, according to the manufacturer, been made from recycled post-consumer plastic. According to Vitra, the material comes from German household recyclable waste collection, mainly from used packaging. A characteristic feature of the new seat shells is the delicate speckling, particularly in the lighter colours, which results from the composition of the recycled material.
This chair is the contemporary production of the Fiberglass Chair. It was created in collaboration with Zenith Plastics as part of the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition held by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. For its configuration, the manufacturer draws on the multifunctional furniture system of the Plastic Chairs, combining the versatile seat shell with a matching base to form the Eames Plastic Side Chair. According to the manufacturer, the seat shell is made of polypropylene. Maple and ash are used for the base.
The Plastic Side Chairs
The Eames chairs, then made of polyester resin, were the first plastic chairs to be produced in series. The manufacturer from Weil am Rhein brought production of the chairs by Charles and Ray Eames to Europe at an early stage. Production using polyester resin was discontinued in 1993. Since 1999 the seat shells have been made of polypropylene.
The designers Charles and Ray Eames
Charles and Ray Eames are among the most important designers of the 20th century. They are internationally known for their contribution to architecture and furniture design. Charles was born in St. Louis in 1907 and married Ray Kaiser, born in 1912, in 1941. The two met at the Cranbrook Academy in Michigan, where she assisted Charles and Eero Saarinen, who received two first prizes for their moulded plywood designs in the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition held by the Museum of Modern Art. The success story of Charles and Ray's furniture design was to follow.
One chair – many combinations
The Plastic Side Chair is among the best-known pieces by the designers and is timeless. It is available in various versions. The seat shell comes in a wide choice of colours. Combined with the different bases and the Hopsak seat cushions or full upholstery, the chair can be assembled to suit your own preferences. Its understated design makes it versatile in use, an eye-catcher in the living area as much as in a café.

Average body height has increased since the chair was developed in the 1950s. The manufacturer has responded and offers the chair in a new seat height of 43 cm.
Care
The plastic surfaces can be cleaned with a neutral cleaning agent and a soft damp cloth. Base and seat cover can also be freed of stains this way. Dust and lint can be removed from the seat cushions by vacuuming.
