"Vitra DSW Eames Plastic Side Chair RE"
Design: Charles and Ray Eames, 1950
Since the beginning of 2024, the seat shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs have been made from a special material: recycled post-consumer plastic. The source of this recycled material is new - it comes from the German household recycling collection "Gelber Sack", mainly from used packaging. It reduces climate-damaging emissions compared to conventional plastic and uses significantly less energy. Another characteristic aspect of the new seat shells are the delicate speckles, especially in the lighter colors, which arise due to the composition of the recycled material.

Vitra Eames DSW - The multifunctional chair
This modern chair is the contemporary production of the legendary Fiberglass Chair. It was created in collaboration with Zenith Plastics in the course of the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. For the assembly, the manufacturer reverts to the multifunctional furniture system of the Plastic Chairs and connects the flexibly usable seat shell with the matching underframe to the Eames Plastic Side Chair. The seat shell of the Eames Plastic Side Chair is made of recyclable polypropylene. For the undercarriage, maple and ash from German forestry are used.
The Plastic Side Chairs
The Eames chairs made of polyester resin were the first plastic chairs made in series. The manufacturer from Wheil am Rhein brought the production of chairs by Charles and Ray Eames early to Europe to market them there. In 1993 the production of Plastic Chairs was discontinued for reasons of sustainability. The use of the polyester resin for the Eames chairs was no longer an ecological problem. Since 1999, the shells of the chairs have been made of environmentally friendly, recyclable polypropylene.
