The Thonet S 33 - swinging instead of sitting.

The noble Thonet S 33 chairs have a frame also made of tubular steel (chrome-plated). The cover is made of core leather, also called blank leather or core leather, a high-quality vegetable-tanned cowhide. The leather upholstery of the furniture can be tightened via tensioning brackets. The chair is available in black or chocolate (dark brown). The versions with armrests are made of beech wood. The furniture is part of the product range of the family company Thonet; the design of these products still inspires today. For more information, please contact us.

The designer Mart Stam (1899-1986)

The Dutchman Mart Stam is considered one of the most important designers and architects of modernism. Together with Hans Schmidt and El Lissitzky he founded the avant-garde magazine ABC. In 1926 Stam developed the first cantilever chair from experiments with tubular steel. It was first exhibited in 1927 at the Weißenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart. There it came to the attention of the organizer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, whom he had previously shown his ideas for a chair without back legs. The chair's light appearance was revolutionary at the time; it was in stark contrast to the heavy furniture that was common in the 1920s. The ergonomic advantages of light springing as opposed to rigid sitting were not appreciated until later. Mies van der Rohe took up the idea of the cantilever chair, as did Marcel Breuer, who stood with Mart Stam before the Reichsgericht Leipzig. Mart Stam was credited with the authorship of the Thonet S 33. Stam was a guest lecturer at the Bauhaus Dessau before working in Russia and other countries from 1930. From 1948 he worked as an architect in Amsterdam, where he was also director of the School of Arts and Crafts. From 1950 to 1953, the architect was director at the College of Applied Arts in Weißensee (Berlin) until he returned to Amsterdam. From 1977 until his death in 1986, the artist lived in Switzerland.
