"Thonet Cantilever S-64 set of 4"
The classic among the classics: Thonet S 64 set of 4
It couldn't be more classic and comfortable: Thonet chairs made of wood with a tubular steel frame were designed in the 1920s by Bauhaus designer Marcel Breuer. The cantilever chairs with armrests are the first milestone in ergonomic sitting. The furniture is available in black-stained beech or in oiled walnut. In addition to the classic wickerwork, there is also a choice of modern plastic mesh covering.
The designer Marcel Breuer
Marcel Lajos Breuer (1902-1981) is considered one of the developers of tubular steel furniture. After completing his carpentry apprenticeship in Weimar, Breuer worked at the Bauhaus with Walter Gropius for several years. In 1925, he became head of the furniture workshop at the Bauhaus in Dessau. The most famous chair from this design phase is the armchair B 3 made of leather and tubular steel, better known under the nickname "Wassily Chair", whose design only received great recognition in the 1960s. In 1933 Breuer fled Germany because of his Jewish faith and emigrated to the USA, where he established the Faculty of Architecture at Harvard University together with Gropius and worked as an architect.
