Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio was born in Helsinki in 1932. The Finnish designer became known for his furniture made of plastic. Aarnio studied design at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki. In 1962 he founded his own office, where he also developed the famous Ball Chair in 1963. The Ball Chair caused a sensation at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne in 1966 and gave its designer an international breakthrough. This success led to further designs in a similar style, such as the Bubble Chair in 1968. Another important chair, the Pastil Chair, won the American Industrial Award in 1968. Eero Aarnio continues to work as a designer to our present day.

Importance of Eero Aarnio armchairs and chairs

Eero Aarnio was among the first Finnish designers to work with materials such as acrylic and fiberglass. His designs influenced the 60's and were popular accessories in science fiction movies. With its striking shape and colorfulness, the Ball Chair is a statement of its time and a symbol of the eccentric pop culture of the 60s: mass production, enthusiasm for technology and a stylish shape reminiscent of space capsules. With his idea of mobile living concepts, Aarnio was ten years ahead of his time.
