Thonet S 220 chair

Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility's design of the S 220 molded wood chair translated the familiar repertoire of forms found in the iconic 214 and 209 bentwood chairs into a stackable and material-saving chair with an ergonomic seat shell and lightweight tubular steel frame. The chair can be used in both private and public spaces and is available in a variety of wood species and colors. Optional bentwood armrests can also be added. The design takes full advantage of the potential of shaped wood as a material, which has always been a driver of innovation at Thonet.

The S 220 features precise lines and an organic design that surrounds users in a comfortable and supportive way. The chair's elegant waist allows the seat shell to sway comfortably. The S 220's signature "waterfall edge," as the designers call it, avoids pressure points and enhances seating comfort while accommodating the radii of the tubular steel base. This harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics and functionality is typical of Thonet designs.
