Elegance in Wood
The production of this elegant bentwood classic is a masterpiece – just like its construction. The loop forms both the arm and backrest and is made from a single piece of solid beech wood. Under the influence of steam, the material is bent into shape and placed in a metal mold for several days to obtain its final form. Like the pioneering model 214, the 209 consists of just 6 parts. Its organic shape, combined with aesthetic minimalism, gives the chair its sculptural appearance. Swiss architect Le Corbusier shared the enthusiasm for this classic. He used it in the Weißenhof Estate in Stuttgart and many of his other buildings. The architect once said that the Thonet 209 “possesses nobility.”

Gebrüder Thonet
Their father Michael, founder of the company, revolutionized the furniture world with the ability to bend solid wood and created the café chair – one of the most important chairs in modern furniture history.
In 1853, Michael Thonet transferred ownership of his Viennese company to his sons Franz, August, Josef, Jakob, and Michael Jr. After his death in 1871, they led the company together, guiding it toward a great future. The brothers developed new working processes and machines, introduced countless innovations and designs. Around 1900, the third generation – Karl, Theodor, Julius, Victor, Alfred, and Richard – actively joined the business, creating many new products and designs.
Worldwide sales locations followed, and the furniture designed by renowned architects and designers for Thonet made the company one of the largest furniture manufacturers. The introduction of tubular steel furniture in the 1930s marked a period of enormous growth. Yet, enthusiasm for bentwood chairs has remained strong to this day. They have found a place in iconic institutions like the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Environment
Responsible action, environmental protection, and sustainable growth – Thonet strikes a balance in the production of its furniture, like the 209, incorporating social awareness and holistic, sustainable practices. Thonet furniture is built for a long life. Durability is a top priority. No environmental harm occurs during manufacturing or disposal. Any new design must meet strict criteria for recyclability, sustainability, and eco-friendliness before being added to the product range. The company uses only electricity from sustainable, ecological sources. To reduce its environmental footprint, Thonet invests in recycling systems for solvents.
