The Ant™ was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1952 as a three-legged chair in the shape of the upright animal. Despite the unusual design, the chair is stable even on uneven ground. The Ant™ Chair was avant garde, as rebellious as it was revolutionary. Today, manufacturer Fritz Hansen produces the chair as three- and four-legged, purist or conventional. Both variations of the Ant Chair™ are still fresh and modern after more than 70 years. To ensure even more modernity, sixteen new colors have now been created, which, in addition to the Ant Chair™, are also used for the Grand Prix™ and the Series 7™ brand chairs.

16 modern colors for the Ant Chair™

A Sense of Colour - these are sixteen new colors for designer Arne Jacobsen's furniture, developed by Carla Sozzani for Fritz Hansen. The new color palette includes Yellow, True Yellow, Paradise Orange or Burnt Yellow; Red, Wild Rose, Pale Rose and Venetian Red; Green, Olive Green and Evergreen; Blue, Dusk Blue, Midnight Blue or Lavender Blue; and classic colors such as White and Black (White and Black) and their gradations Light Beige, Nine Grey and Deep Clay. The new palette celebrates nature or its enchanting scents, a touch of yellow, red or blue, a taste of pink, a scent of green.... To this can be added the color of the frame, Brown Bronze, Black, Warm Graphite, Silver Grey, White, Chrome or Nine Grey.

History of the Ant

The chair was designed by Jacobsen in 1951 for the canteen of the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and produced by Fritz Hansen since 1952. In addition to the design with three legs, the chair is characterized by modern materials and production techniques; its seat and backrest are made of only one piece of bent veneer plywood. The waist shape gave the chair its name. Originally, the bases were made of plastic, later replaced by steel tubes. Due to its construction, the chair has a comparatively low weight and is stackable. The Ant™ Chair is considered the predecessor of the 7™ series from 1955, but it was made with four legs from the beginning. The Ant is exhibited worldwide in museums such as MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York.

Carla Sozzani

Carla Sozzani, born in 1947, studied economics in Milan. While still a student, she worked for fashion magazines and became editor-in-chief at Italian Vogue. In 1990 she founded her art gallery, Galleria Carla Sozzani, at Corso Como 10 in Milan, where she exhibited numerous well-known photographers and designers. There are now other Corso Como 10 concepts, including in Shanghai and New York. Her foundation, Fondazione Sozzani, promotes design and art. Since 1989, Sozzani has been in a relationship with American sculptor and draftsman Kris Ruhs, with whom she also collaborates.

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen (b. 1902-1971) is considered the most prominent exponent of functional Danish design. Jacobsen became known for the Bellavista development in Klampenborg, conceptually designed to give every Dane a view of the sea, and the complete interior of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Today's Radisson Collection Hotel still contains some of the legendary seating furniture designed in 1950. In addition to the Ant, the Grand Prix, and Series 7, Jacobsen also developed The Egg and The Swan, whose construction allows a touch of privacy in a hotel.
