Vitra Flower Table - a table with design history

Flower power with heart, now available in the pro office store: The Vitra Flower Table was designed by Alexander Girard in the mid-1950s for the Miller House in Columbus, Indiana. In 1952, professor Joseph Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia commissioned Girard to design their private home in Columbus. The unconventional structure was designed by internationally acclaimed architect Eero Saarinen; Alexander Girard was responsible for the interior and accessories of the residence, which was created in consultation with the Miller family. His goal was to create a warm atmosphere for a cozy home.

The Miller family's high-end art collection was combined with folk art and custom objects. In the center of the home was a lounge area set into the floor. The sofas were seasonally changing with colorful pillows. In the center was the Flower Table, which was a brass table made for Xenia Miller. The Flower Table was further developed together with the Girard family and since 1977 has been produced by manufacturer Vitra from powder-coated steel in two sizes and the colors red and anthracite and can also be used outdoors. When the house was completed in 1957, Girard had become a family friend. The Miller House is now part of the Indianapolis Art Museum.

The designer Alexander Girard

Girard Alexander Hayden, born in 1907 in New York, died in Santa Fe (New Mexico), worked as an architect, interior designer and textile designer. He designed textiles, furniture, corporate design and interiors. Colorful organic motifs and stylized ornaments characterize his work. Together with his wife Susan, he collected folk art, which he donated to the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe in 1978. His Checker plaid textile design is also used as upholstery fabric for the legendary Eames Wire Chairs and Plastic Chairs.
