The revolution of the club chair

This iconic Eames Lounge Chair is the result of many years of development work by Charles and Ray Eames. The requirements for the design reflected the demands that the Eames couple had on their furniture creations. A more comfortable, modern and elegant version of the chunky club armchairs of the time. These characteristics made it a classic in the history of furniture and one of the most famous designs of the designer couple Eames. In 1956 the armchair was produced for Herman Miller. Since 1957 Vitra has been manufacturing the armchair for Europe.

One of the first "users" was the film director Billy Wilder, who used the armchair during the shooting breaks.

To new size

The manufacturer offers two sizes for the Eames Lounge Chair. The classic size from 1956, with a height of 84 cm and the new size with a height of 89 cm. The introduction of the larger chair, as with the world-famous Eames Plastic Chairs, is due to the growth of mankind. The average human being is about 10 cm taller than when Charles and Ray Eames created these icons of furniture design.

Variation, Configuration, Composition

The configurable variants are manifold. Wood elements in Santos rosewood, cherry and black walnut frame the comfortable seating furniture. The bases are available polished, polished with black sides or chrome-plated. Various leather finishes in different colours give the comfortable armchair a very personal touch and allow the colour to match the room or even the other way round.

Manufacturing
Vitra manufactures the Eames Lounge Chair according to the standards that already applied in 1956. The high-quality materials are lovingly handcrafted to create an armchair which, thanks to its first-class qualities, will give generations of sitting pleasure.

Originally, Brazilian rosewood was used for the individual shells. Today this wood is under special protection. Today Vitra uses the visually similar Santos Rosewood and pays particular attention to the use of wood from sustainable forestry.

The luxurious upholstery with leather cover is clipped into the wooden shells. This makes it easier to clean the individual parts and makes it easy to replace the affected part if it is damaged. The armrests are also upholstered.

For stability the star base is mounted, which can be ordered either chrome-plated or polished.
