Elegance in wood
The production of this elegant bentwood classic is, like its construction, a masterpiece. The temple forms the arm and backrest at the same time and is formed from a piece of solid beechwood. Under the action of steam, the material is bent into shape to finally reach the final shape in a metal device over several days. Like the pioneer model 214, the 209 also consists of only 6 parts. The organic form gives the chair, in conjunction with aesthetic reduction, its sculptural appearance. The enthusiasm for this classic was shared by Le Corbusier, the Swiss architect. Among other locations, he put him in the Weißenhof settlement in Stuttgart and many other buildings. The architect confirmed that the Thonet 209 "possesses nobility".
Thonet Brothers
Father Michael, the founder of the company, is revolutionizing the world of furniture with the possibility of bending solid wood, and designing with the coffeehouse chair, one of the most important chairs of modern furniture history.
Michael Thonet surpassed his Viennese company to his sons Franz, August, Josef, Jakob and Michael jun. in 1853. After his death in 1871, they jointly directed the destinies of the manufacturer, to whom a great future was to be imminent. The brothers developed new work processes and machines, presented numerous further developments and constantly new designs. The 3rd generation was active in the company at the turn of the century around 1900. Karl, Theodor, Julius, Victor, Alfred and Richard designed many new furniture and products.
Sales locations worldwide followed and the furniture was designed by renowned architects and designers for Thonet. Thonet grew to one of the largest furniture manufacturers. In particular, the beginning of the production of steel tube furniture in the 1930s meant an enormous growth for the company. The enthusiasm for the bentwood chairs has been and still remains unbroken. They found their place in well-known institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York or the Center Pompidou in Paris.
Environment
Responsible acting, environmental protection and growth. In producing his furniture, such as the 209, Thonet creates a balance that includes social prudence and holistic, sustainable action. Thonet furniture are built for a long life. Longevity is the property to which Thonet attaches great importance. Environmental degradation does not occur either during production or during recycling. A new design must always meet the requirements of recyclability, sustainability and environmental friendliness before it can be included in the manufacturer's product portfolio. The company relies exclusively on electricity from energy sources that are sustainable and ecological. To reduce the ecological footprint, Thonet invests in solvent recycling plants.
