Thonet armchairs at pro office

Thonet furniture is a true classic among seating furniture. The traditional company looks back on a long history, influenced by the changing times. However, Thonet is still one of the most important manufacturers of designer furniture. We look at a wide product range, which is characterised by unique and prestigious designs. Designs by designers of the 1920s and 30s, such as Marcel Breuer or Mies van der Rohe, are still produced by Thonet today. Contemporary designs by designers such as Hadi Teherani, Norman Forster or Stefan Diez are also united under Thonet's roof. Classic chairs in Bauhaus design are characteristic of Thonet.

Great seating experience with our Thonet models

At Thonet you will find a wide selection of different lounge chairs and armchairs. Classic for Thonet are cantilever chairs made of tubular steel. They bounce when you sit on them and often do not require heavy upholstery. Thonet not only offers cantilever chairs, but also cantilever stools to match the chair. The Thonet S411 is a cantilever chair with a matching stool. For comfortable sitting, Thonet has a range of lounge furniture in its assortment. At Thonet, there are not only products for indoors, but also for outdoors. The Thonet S 35 N All Seasons lounge chair is a cantilever chair that you can place in your garden. Even though Thonet's designer chairs look very contemporary, many of the designs are actually vintage. The classic Bauhaus design came to life in the 1920s, so many of the designs are around 100 years old. But even today they still look modern and timeless, like the Thonet S 33, whose design dates back to 1927.

That is Thonet

Thonet GmbH is a family-run company based in Frankenberg. The traditional company was founded in 1819 by Michael Thonet. With its tubular steel furniture in the Bauhaus style, Thonet is still an important manufacturer of designer furniture today. Michael Thonet, a native of Boppard, founded the company in Vienna and produced furniture made of bent wood, so-called bentwood. Commercial success came after the Viennese coffee house chair, the Thonet No. 14, made the company famous. In 1853, the founder left the company to his five sons, but remained active for the company until the end of his life. From then on, the Thonet company was known as "Gebrüder Thonet". Many years followed in which Thonet produced bentwood furniture and production was significantly expanded. The collapse of the monarchy and the difficult years after the First World War took their toll on the company. In 1920 the company was bought by the businessman Johann Pilzer and merged with Mundus AG, later with Joseph & Jacob Kohn. Pilzer invested in steel furniture and thus managed to make the company profitable again. When the National Socialists marched into Austria, the Jewish Johann Pilzer had to flee and emigrated to the USA, and the Thonet company was broken up. By the end of the Second World War, the factories in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland had been expropriated and the Vienna headquarters destroyed. Georg Thonet, great-grandson of the founder, rebuilt the destroyed factory in Frankenberg and re-established the company in 1953 under the name Thonet GmbH.
