Vitra Miniature of the Miniature Collection Vitra Design Museum. George Nelson designed to adapt against the tendency seating the needs of the human body, seating objects from the canon of spontaneous, popular everyday culture. The decisive impetus for its shapes he found in the art of the 50s. His symbolic statements promoted a new, stressed permeable nature of the sitting. The shell of the coconut inspired Nelson to Coconut Chair. The backrest shell is made from a bent piece of aluminum sheet with padding. The three-legged base made of steel tube is stabilized by fine cross bars. It gives the impression that the frame span the floating, swinging form and fix it on the ground.
