Eames Plastic Chair RE: Sustainable style for your home

Charles and Ray Eames pursued the vision of making high-quality design accessible to a wide audience. This mission is perfectly reflected in their iconic Plastic Chairs. The idea of an ergonomically shaped seat shell occupied the duo for years, and they finally found the perfect material for their creations in fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin.

A sustainable evolution: Eames Plastic Chair RE

The timeless classic presents itself in a new form - Eames Plastic Chair RE. The seat shells are now made from recycled post-consumer material, which not only protects the environment, but also gives each shell a unique touch thanks to tiny pigment spots.

The Eames made clever use of the advantages of this innovative material - from its malleability and strength to its pleasant feel. The Eames Plastic Chairs thus became the first mass-produced plastic chairs in the history of furniture.

Multifunctionality and sustainable design

The Eames Plastic Chairs laid the foundation for a widely used type of furniture - the multifunctional chair. The possibility of combining the shells with different bases made them a versatile companion for various purposes. As early as 1950, the Eameses presented a range of bases for different sitting positions.

In close collaboration with the Eames family, Vitra has continuously introduced more sustainable materials for the seat shells over the years. From 2024, the introduction of recycled plastic in the seat shells marks a further step towards environmental awareness. The chair family now bears the name Eames Plastic Chair RE, with the high-quality recycled material coming from the German recycling bag.

The decision to use recycled material not only reduces climate-damaging emissions compared to primary plastic made from crude oil, but also lowers the consumption of primary energy. The different color variants of the shells are given subtle speckles by the recycled composition, giving each chair a unique look. The color white will be replaced by Cotton White RE and will remain available in original polypropylene until the end of 2024.

With the Eames Plastic Chair RE, you are not only relying on timeless design, but also on sustainable materials that reduce the ecological footprint. Discover the perfect symbiosis of style and environmental awareness for your home.
