Desks for the office or for the home office are available in a wide range of variants, shapes and colors. Finding the right office furniture is not always easy. In addition to the right office chair with the right seat, the table is also an important tool of ergonomics. The shape of the table top and the functions of the table are many.

A large selection

Desks are available in a large number of designs. The factor that significantly determines the size and function is the tabletop. This comes in various basic shapes. The classic among them is the rectangular desk. This is shape is the most used and comes in many sizes. The rectangular table is well suited for rooms with a lot of space. Also on and under the table is plenty of space for PC, monitor, roll container and co. Disadvantages with this table shape are that the corners are not usable as a workplace and the shape does not fit every room concept.

The little brother of the rectangular desk, is the square table. This one is best described with the words "square, practical, good". A square desk is very space-saving, usually very budget-friendly and can be easily incorporated into rooms, due to its uncomplicated shape. However, the small work surface does not provide space for everything, especially for working on the PC is often not enough space. The square table is extremely practical, but often not necessarily stylish.

Another classic in the office is the corner desk. This table is similar to the square desk, with the difference that it can be placed in a corner and has an additional work surface on the side. The working surface usually has an indentation, in front of which you sit. The corner desk offers the advantage of making good use of unused corners. It provides ample space for several screens or other things on the table. In addition, it visually enhances the office. However, since it has an unconventional shape, usually only one mobile container fits under the table. In addition, it is rather costly.

The arched desk is a model that is rarely found in the office. This desk has a curve to the outside, but offers straight edges on the seat and outside. The arch desk offers a lot of space and is a highlight in any room. However, the unconventional shape does not lend itself well to office spaces. Instead, it lends itself well to public-access areas, such as the reception area. Arched desks are usually a bit more costly and don't stack well next to each other.

A relative of the arch desk is the kidney desk. This table is rounded all over and has the typical shape of a kidney. The shape of this table looks harmonious and gentle, as it has no edges. The kidney desk is good for holding consultations on it. It also offers enough space to use it for working. The kidney table is relatively costly and does not combine well with other tables. Document storage can look a bit messy since there are no edges.

Similar to the corner desk, the angled desk is a table that can be placed in the corner and provides a lateral use area. However, it does not have a curve on the inside, instead it has a corner there. This table is often found in administrative offices. It offers enough space to work and is also good to use as a team workstation in a two-person combination. Angle desks are usually rather high-priced.

Height adjustable desks

Height-adjustable office chairs have long been standard in offices or the home office. But nowadays, a height-adjustable desk should also be part of the package. Alternating between sitting and standing brings variety to the posture and gets the circulation going. Body size alone is not the decisive factor for the right height when sitting and standing, as many people assume. In fact, proportions are also important for the right table height. This also includes other factors, such as shoes. Depending on the thickness of the sole or whether there are heels, the intended table height is suddenly no longer suitable. A biological factor that comes into play is that the spine compresses over the course of the day. So you become a little smaller. Depending on the activity, a different table height is also necessary.

Therefore, if a new table is to be purchased, it should be ensured, if possible, that it is height-adjustable. The type and extent of height adjustability should be considered. To be able to use the desk comfortably for sitting and standing, the adjustment range should be possible from 65 cm to 125 cm. When the desk is extended to the maximum height, it should not wobble and continue to stand stably. If possible, a height-adjustable desk should be adjustable without tools and continuously. Desks that can be adjusted electrically are well suited for this purpose. Many of these desks are equipped with a profile memory. This is practical for storing the correct heights for sitting and standing. Profiles allow flexible and quick change of working position. This is ergonomic and allows to bring variety in posture.

Height-adjustable tables are divided into manually and electrically adjustable. Manually adjustable desks are not seen so often nowadays, because the electric version is more comfortable and easier to use. The important thing with manual desks is the weight adjustment. The preload must be adjustable to the weight of the top, plus the materials on it. Otherwise, the desk top will have to be lifted with your own muscle power. For the average person, this is inconvenient in everyday life. In addition, this variant should have a brake protection, so that when lowering the table top is braked.

Motorized adjustable desks are now commonplace. Desks with two motors offer more power to raise the tabletop, but are not necessarily necessary. The only important thing is that everything happens synchronously. For offices where you sit with several colleagues, a quiet model is important so as not to disturb them while they work. With motorized adjustable models should also be considered that they can consume electricity in standby. If the table does not need to be constantly adjusted in height, the power supply can also be unplugged.

Accessories and other

Anyone who chooses a desk should, of course, pay attention to the design in addition to the function. The new desk should fit well into the room concept and have a design that is as timeless as possible. This way, you can be sure that it won't eventually look stale or belong to a long-gone fashion trend.

Neutral colors and a matte color are basically always a good choice. These are easy on the eye because they reflect less light. In addition, marks or stains on them are less visible. Neutral colors are also easier to combine and always look contemporary.

If you work with large screens, the top should be deep so you don't sit directly in front of it. A work surface that is too small basically restricts your freedom of movement and hinders your work. So always make sure that the desk is also large enough for your needs.

Working with a computer and other electronic devices often brings a large number of cables that need to be organized somewhere. The right accessories at the desk are then especially important. Cable outlets and cable channels provide order on and under the table. A holder for a computer is also practical, but not absolutely necessary for everyone. If you primarily work with a laptop, you don't need a mount for a desktop PC. If you want to use your table while standing, you should still make sure that all cables are long enough when you raise the tabletop.
