Thonet S 285 tubular steel desk

Product information

"Thonet S 285 tubular steel desk"

Thonet SchreibtischDesign
Art and technology, linked to a formal unity. This is the programmatic claim of the Bauhaus. This desk is a perfect example for this. Storage elements and table top made of stained or lacquered wood fit harmoniously into the design of steel tube. The wooden elements seem to float in the supporting frame of steel pipe. Formally balanced and simple in its proportions, the Thonet Desk S285 embodies "The New Objectivity" and an important piece of contemporary history.

Designer Marcel Breuer
Marcel Breuer was born in 1902 in Pécs, Hungary. From 1920 to 1924 he studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he took over the management of the carpentry workshop at Bauhaus a year later. During this time, Marcel Breuer designed steel tube furniture that was groundbreaking and characterized by Constructivism and De Stijl. In 1928 Breuer went to Berlin for three years, where he worked as an interior architect before designing the first aluminum furniture in 1932. In 1935 he developed the Thonet desk S285 and he was an architect in London until 1937. After obtaining a professorship at Harvard University in Cambridge, he opened an architectural office together with Walter Gropius. In 1946, Marcel Breuer finally founded his own studio and many designs followed. The outstanding designer and architect died on July 1, 1981 in New York.
