Product information

"Vitra Tip Ton RE from recycled plastic"

Design Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby

The new Vitra Tip Ton RE stacking chair

One hundred percent recyclable it has always been, the ergonomic Vitra Tip Ton chair by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. Now the Tip Ton RE is also available directly from recycled material.

The Vitra Tip Ton made from recycled material

The Swiss company Vitra launches its successful Tip Ton chair made of recycled material. The Tip Ton RE based on a 2011 design is made from the contents of the yellow bag. The plastic is already in the world and will be reprocessed in the course of the recycling process and transformed into noble design with ergonomic seating qualities. According to studies conducted by ETH Zurich, test persons show increased muscle activity and a better oxygen supply. The furniture offers ergonomic sitting due to the nine degree forward inclined sitting position. The chairs are also space-saving and practical, also suitable for outdoor use; up to four chairs can be stacked.

Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby

The designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby (both born in 1969) founded their own studio in 1996, where, among other things, they designed the tip clay for the manufacturer Vitra. The duo is known for their innovative combination of craftsmanship and industrial production as well as their innovative colouring. Their works are shown in international permanent exhibitions. Both designers teach at universities and work as consultants.

Short history of development of the Tip Ton

With the "Tip Ton" a name was found which acoustically reproduces the sitting positions and reminds of the school in Tipton for which the chair was originally designed. The tool used to make the Tip Ton weighs over 20 tonnes - the chair itself weighs only 4.5 kilograms. During development, it became clear that the chair is not only suitable for school, but can also be used in offices and private rooms as a universal seating solution.

Sustainable furniture in trend

A long-lasting chair is considered sustainable per se because it is used for a long time, hardly breaks down and is often inherited. In the case of antiques, vintage and retro furniture, the value tends to increase. The use of recycled material reduces the environmental impact even further, which is why designers and manufacturers are also experimenting with recycled plastic. In the meantime, the end of "life time" is also being considered and well-known manufacturers such as Vitra are venturing into the serial production of recycled products.
