Design: Charles and Ray Eames, 1950

Since the beginning of 2024, the seat shells of the Eames Plastic Chairs have been made from a special material: recycled post-consumer plastic. The source of this recycled material is new - it comes from the German household recycling collection "Gelber Sack", mainly from used packaging. It reduces climate-damaging emissions compared to conventional plastic and uses significantly less energy. Another characteristic aspect of the new seat shells are the delicate speckles, especially in the lighter colors, which arise due to the composition of the recycled material.

Vitra chair Eames RAR - Black is beautiful
Vitra gives the Rocking Armchair RAR a contemporary look. The armchair from the Black Collection has an organically shaped, black seat shell and a completely black substructure. This gives the Eames Plastic Armchair a stylish, elegant look and makes it a modern and timeless eye-catcher.

History
In 1946, the first Eames designs went into production. Herman Miller from Zeeland, Michigan was responsible for the production of the first furniture from bended wood. In 1948 Charles and Ray Eames presented the first plastic chairs. In context of the "Low Cost Furniture Design" competition of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Charles and Ray Eames were able to present the Eames Plastic Side Chairs. These were the first series of plastic chairs to be made in history. Vitra took over the production of the Eames Plastic Chairs for the European market in 1957. In 1993 the production of the chair ended for ecological reasons. With the possibility to manufacture the seat shells with the recyclable polypropylene, Vitra revived the production of the Eames plastic chairs in 1999. 

Ray Eames
... was born 1912 as Beatrice Alexandra Kaiser in Sacramento in the US state of California. Ray Eames studied painting in New York and participated in painting courses at Hofmann School until 1937. In the New York Riverside Museum, she participated in the first exhibition of abstract artists from America, held in 1937. In 1940, Ray Eames enrolled at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where her future husband, Charles Eames, headed the Department of Industrial Design. Ray Eames assisted Charles Eames and Eero Saarinnen, who created designs for the "Organic Future Competition" from formable plywood and thus won the first prizes. A year later, Charles and Ray Eames got married.

All black
Classic and modern at the same time, the Vitra chair RAR in the Black Edition sprays the charm of the classic Eames rocking chair and in the same way a contemporary aura. The Eames Plastic Armchair from the Black Collection is solid black in color. The seat shell is dyed black and the base is powder coated. The maple rockers are dark stained and complete the identity of this model.

Care
The surfaces made of plastic as well as seat covers and undercarriage can be cleaned with a neutral detergent and a soft damp cloth.
