Vitra Organic Conference

The design for the Organic Conference Chair was created in 1940 as an entry for a competition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The two designers Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames created the extraordinary chair as a reading chair. The design was far ahead of its time at the time and, along with the cantilever chair, is one of the most important designs of the 20th century. The shape of the Organic Conference Chair served as a source of inspiration for many other pieces of furniture and designers. Due to a lack of technical possibilities, the chair could not be mass produced until 10 to 15 years later.

The Organic Conference Chair's upholstered and organically shaped seat shell gives it its name. Vitra has adored the exceptionally comfortable chair since 2012. Nowadays, it is especially popular in its function as a dining table chair or conference chair. The Oganic Conference Chair consists of a laminated seat shell, which contains polyurethane foam padding and is covered with a fabric cover. The base is made of wood and available in black ash or natural oak.

Eero Saarinen & Charles Eames as a duo

Eero Saarinen is a Finnish designer and was born in 1910. His father was the architect Eliel Saarinen, the creative was so to speak in the cradle. In his youth he studied sculpture in Paris, then architecture in New Haven. From 1936 he worked in the architectural office that belonged to his father. He obtained a teaching position at Cranbrook Academy. There he made the acquaintance of Charles Eames, who was working on designs made of shaped laminated wood. The two combined their creative forces and together designed the Organic Chair for the Museum of Modern Art competition and won first place. In addition to the Organic Concerence Chair, the two also designed the Organic Highback Chair together.
