Vitra - a family business
The family business Vitra was founded in 1950 and stands for durable products, sustainable growth and outstanding design. The company is based in Birsfelden near Basel, and has two production sites in Germany, in Weil am Rhein and Neuchâtel. Weil am Rhein is also home to the Vitra Design Museum, the Vitra Schaudepot and the VitraHaus on the Vitra Campus. The Vitra Home Collection comprises furniture and chairs by classic and modern designers that are distinguished by their durability and lasting value or were milestones in technical development, such as the plastic chair, which was named Panton after its designer.
Dining or Outdoor Dining
Picnics in the open air - with or without tables - is the highest good in summer. The designer couple Charles and Ray Eames, who went down in design history with Ottoman through the lounge chair, have also often organised a picnic on the small lawn in front of Eames House. A beautifully laid table with meals made from seasonal foods refreshes body and soul. The dining table is also important indoors; it is often the centre of the house where people drink, eat and enjoy together, engage in conversation or make plans. A good dining table like the "Eames Segmented Tables Dining" made of solid wood (oiled oak) can also be used for home office work.
Eames Fibreglass Chairs
Mobile and modern sitting: The Chair and Armchair were among the first seating furniture to incorporate mobile rather than rigid seating. For the Fiberglass Chairs, Charles and Ray Eames developed special colours that were inspired by nature. From the original colour palette, Vitra selected Elephant Hide Grey, Eames Sea Foam Green (meerschaum green), Eames Raw Umber (raw amber) and Eames Parchment (parchment) for the new Fiberglass Armchairs. The organically shaped shells of the chairs and armchairs are shown off to their best advantage by the restrained colours and the fibreglass look and can be perfectly integrated into any environment.
Sea Things from Vitra, Summer Collection 2020
The Sea Things of the Vitra Summer Collection 2020 includes the Classic Trays, Paper Napkins and Table Runners, all with the "Sea Things" motif designed by Ray Eames in 1945, with a cheerful underwater pattern of sea creatures such as starfish, jellyfish and crustaceans. The motif was designed by Ray in 1947 for the printed fabric competition organized by the New York Museum of Modern Art and won a prize. In collaboration with grandson and director of the Eames Office, Eames Demetrios, Vitra is reviving the motif as a limited edition for the summer of 2020.
Live and let live
Make yourself comfortable and cosy on the Soft Modular Sofa by Jasper Morrison. The sofa offers enough space for spontaneous summer parties or a relaxing siesta. The small Occasional Table LTR (Low Table Rod Base), which the designer couple Eames already had in their home as a practical side table next to the sofa or a chair, goes well with it. As part of the Summer Stories, the Occasional Table LTR is also available with a marble top, which gives the table even more elegance for any occasion.
Accessories - not only for the summer
Enrich your refuge now with materials from nature. The two metre long, hand-painted Eames House Whale made of wood was part of the designers' furnishings. Don't worry, the reproduction of a whale made of ash wood is much smaller, but also a piece of genuine Nordic folk art. The bird - l'Oiseau - by Erwan and Ronan Bouroullecin was also made from Carrara marble in a limited and numbered edition of 500 pieces by Vitra. The bird is accordingly rare. Marble is individual, it occurs in different grains and colour variations in nature and gets its noble shine through polishing. The L'Oiseau in ceramic is also elaborately handcrafted and is available in different colour variations.
The Cork Family
The Cork Family was designed by Jasper Morrison in 2004 with five formally reduced models made of pure cork, which can be used both as stools and as side tables. The versatile everyday companions and the Cork Bowls, now available as containers or trays in two sizes, fit into any interior. Cork is a natural product, originally made from the bark of cork oaks. Vitra uses cork from recycled material, which gives the Cork Family and Cork Bowls each a unique pattern and feel.
