Vitra Girard Bird by Alexander Girard

Product information

"Vitra Girard Bird by Alexander Girard"

Art for connoisseurs: the Vitra Girard Bird.

Alexander Girard carved this bird in 1945. The Girard Bird appears archaic and minimalist, but is recognizable as a bird sculpture. In the mid-1940s, the designer hand-carved a bird figurine out of apple wood. The bird and other sculptures made of corrugated cardboard, foam rubber, and wood, including plywood, driftwood, and solid wood, were introduced to the American public in Arts & Architecture magazine in July 1945. The figure can be stood on its tail as well as on its implied feet.

What Girard Birds are there?

There is only the one Girard Bird unlike the Wooden Dolls, which are half accessories and half toys, of which you will find several items in the pro office store. The original Girard Bird is part of the Vitra Design Museum archive. The manufacturer Vitra has brought the carved bird back to life together with the artist's family. The sculpture is made of solid wood (maple, dark honey) that comes from France.

Alexander Girard

Alexander Girard, along with George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, made his mark on post-war American design. His main focus was textile design, but he also designed furniture, including products such as armchairs and tables, accessories and complete interiors, such as the internationally known Miller House in Indiana. A small sample of his extensive work can be found in the pro office store, including the Flower Table, wall reliefs, mugs (mugs), trays (trays) and the Wooden Dolls.
