"Vitra Chair 05"
Design: Maarten van Severen
Vitra. 05 - stand on the hind legs
The clear and simple form is the characteristic feature of the Vitra .05, whose construction on the rear legs ensures a high level of seating comfort. The design is by Maarten Van Severen. The seat shell of polyurethane integral foam adapts to the human body, the backrest moves by means of embedded leaf springs when leaning back and offers the typical slight "sinking in" effect of the cantilever chair. The base frame of the .05 also offers unexpectedly good comfort. The original type of cantilever chair from 1926 is thus surpassed in terms of seating comfort and formal uncompromising design. The base of the Vitra .05 is made of stainless steel, which means that the chair can also be used outdoors. The .05 is also available in the practical version stackable up to five chairs. Configure your personal chair in the pro office Shop in the colors grey, dark grey, basic dark, signal red or dark green. The base frame is brushed stainless steel or black powder-coated. You can also find matching tables and other products in the store.
The history of the cantilever chair - a legendary and controversial piece of furniture
The cantilever chair is the legendary chair associated with the Bauhaus. In the course of functionality, two legs were removed from the principle chair, so that the seat seems to float. Both Mart Stam (1899-1986) as well as Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) experimented with stainless steel, whose clean and straightforward look was a counter-design to the Biedermeier furniture popular at the time. A fierce lifelong dispute over the cantilever chair and the design landed in 1932 before the Federal Supreme Court, which awarded Mart Stam the artistic authorship of the cantilever chair. In 1926, Stam had created the first tubular steel chair in history, which the designer called "Cantilever chair S 34". Its seat was still static. One year later, the later Bauhaus director Ludwig Mies van der Rohe added the "S 533" with a rounded frame and a rocking seat. In 1929, Breuer developed today's tubular steel classics "S 32" and "S 64" - in fact, he had already designed a tubular steel stool in 1925.
Maarten Van Severen (1956-2005)
Maarten Van Severen studied architecture at the art school of the university and port city of Ghent. In 1986 he started with furniture designs and one year later founded a workshop for furniture design with a lot of handicraft in limited production. Van Severen developed elementary solutions for furniture types such as chairs, tables, shelves and cupboards. From 1996 until his untimely death he worked with Vitra for many years. Vitra enabled the designer to use new materials and production techniques, which greatly increased his popularity. Van Severen's designs continue to be successively taken into serial production by Vitra.
