The designs of the Thonet S32 are the most produced and well-known classics of steel tube furniture. The constructive form and the grandiose aesthetic connection of pipe braiding, wood and steel pipes are their greatest distinguishing feature. The design falls in the years 1928 to 1931, Marcel Breuer's time as an independent architect and interior architect in Berlin, where he designed a series of grand interior decorations and designed numerous furniture. Thonet has been producing the S32 since 1930.
Marcel Breuer was born in 1902 in Pécs, Hungary. At the state Bauhaus in Weimar, he studied from 1920 to 1924, and in 1925 he took over the management of the moved carpentry workshop at Bauhaus for three years. Constructivism and De Stijl left marks on him at this time and he designed pioneering steel tube furniture. In 1928, Breuer went to Berlin for 3 years, worked as an interior architect and developed the Thonet S32 before traveling and designing aluminum furniture in 1932. From 1935 to 1937 Marcel Breuer worked as an architect in London. Together with Walter Gropius, he opened an architectural office after he had previously been awarded a professorship at Harvard University in Cambridge. With the founding of his own studio in 1946, numerous designs followed in the USA and in Europe. On 1 July 1981 Marcel Breuer died in New York. He is regarded as an outstanding designer and architect of modernity.
The manufacturer is a pioneer in the field of industrial production of steel pipe furniture. At the end of the 1920s, the company used the technology of manufacture, became the largest producer of steel pipe in 1930, and in the same year launched the production of the Thonet S32. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology makes Thonet one of the most successful furniture companies in the world. The products are characterized by exceptional quality and timeless design. At the Frankenberg factory, the longevity of the products is always considered.
The Thonet S32 is also available as a version with armrests (Thonet S64). The seat and back are finished with a tubular braid. The frame is made of chromium-plated steel tube. The beechwood parts are available in a variety of finishes and allow you to compile your very own Thonet S32, to suit the environment and taste. The Thonet chair is without a doubt in every room a view, classic, modern, timeless and beautiful.
