Ronan und Erwan Bouroullec
Two brothers for good design
The brothers Bouroullec were born in France in the 1970s. Their life and creation has been characterized by design. Their own studio opened in 1999 and among other things they worked for Vitra. An unconventional and special product is the Vitra Algue.
The Bouroullec brothers are French designers from Quimper. Ronan Bouroullec (* 1971) and Erwan Bouroullec (* 1976) run a design studio together in Paris since 1999. Ronan studied at the Ecole Nationale des Art Décoratifs in Paris and then founded his design studio. Erwan became Ronan's assistant while still a student at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Cergy Pontoise. After graduating, he joined his brother's design studio in 1999, and they have run the studio together ever since.
The Bouroullec brothers are known for their intelligent and simple designs. They were discovered by Giulio Cappellini at a trade show in 1998. As a result, they received their first commercial commission from the design label cappellini. Today, the two designers have created well-known products and collections for major manufacturers such as Vitra or Magis.
A broad portfolio
One of their best-known designs is the "Algue" curtain, a hanging made of plastic strands that mimics plants and can be used as a decorative element or room divider. Their Copenhague collection for manufacturer Hay also has many aficionados.
The portfolio of Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec includes very different furniture and other accessories. It ranges from home and office furniture to vases, porcelain, tableware, jewelry, accessories and architectural projects. Whether sofa, chair or armchair, the two deal with everything related to the home. The design ranges from extraordinary to reduced and functional.
Their designs and ideas have already won many awards. In 1998 Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec received the award Grand Prix du Design de la Ville de Paris. This was followed in 2008 by the Fin-Juhl Prize in Paris. Many exhibitions in prestigious cities such as Tokyo, London, Amsterdam or Los Angeles have been organized in their honor.
