Vitra Panton Chair Classic

New in the pro office store: the Vitra Panton Chair Classic by the Danish designer Verner Panton, who wrote design history with this furniture. Panton did not like natural materials for furniture construction and experimented with plastic. It was a long way until the chair was produced with hard foam, as no manufacturer dared to produce this extraordinary chair. Vitra founder Willi Fehlbaum signaled interest, but it was his son Rolf Fehlbaum, who discovered the chair on Panton's terrace, who first commissioned his development department to experiment with different materials and manufacturing processes. In 1967, the Vitra company was able to present the Panton Chair, which was soon considered a sensation and went into serial production. The comfortable chair, which could be used for many purposes, was awarded many prizes. In 2018 Vitra launched two special editions - 666 copies of the Panton Chrome with a reflective surface and 333 copies of the Panton Glow with fluorescent pigments that glow in the dark. The original is only available under the name Panton Chair Classic, it is made of solid plastic with a glossy finish in bright or rather reserved colors, such as black or white. The cantilever chair is modern and classic at the same time and therefore suitable for many areas, private and business.

Verner Panton (1926-1998)

Verner Panton is one of the designers who had a significant influence on the development of furniture and interiors from the 1960s to the 1970s. In the spirit of the time, the furniture and lighting were playful and should be flexible. Panton introduced Pop Art into furniture design. He first studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art and became interested in color psychology. From 1950 to 1952 he worked as an assistant to Arne Jacobsen, where he was also involved in the design of the famous "Ant", one of Jacobsen's most famous chairs. Panton's vision was furniture made of artificial material, so he separated from Jacobsen. In the mid-1950s, he traveled through Europe in a converted VW bus to gather impressions and establish contacts with manufacturers and dealers. In 1955 he opened his own design studio.

The Panton Chair is one of the classics of modern furniture design; one of the first chairs is exhibited at MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Many products and part of the estate are in the show depot of the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. The interior of the canteen of the publishing house "Der Spiegel" is now part of the permanent exhibition of the Hamburg Museum of Art and Trade. Not only the Panton Chairs, but also the round Flowerpot lamp and the conical Cone Chair made design history.
