The furniture design system USM Haller (USM = Ulrich Schärer, Münsingen) was designed in 1963 by Fritz Haller and Paul Schärer. USM furniture stands for timeless classic design, the variety of configurations and highest value stability.
The USM furniture construction system Haller has become a furniture classic in the past decades, starting in the 1960s. The possibilities of combinations are endless and furniture of different areas, shelves, tables, containers, sideboards and lowboards can be combined as desired. Like in office furniture as well as in living areas, the design furniture is appreciated as modern classics.
The central USM Haller element
The central design element is a ball - a ball between two elements, to which the adjacent elements are fastened with a patented connecting system.
Read below the extraordinary history of the company USM and the furniture construction system USM Haller:
The name USM is an abbreviation containing the initials of the company founder Ulrich Schärer and the first letter of the small town in Switzerland, where he founded a smithy in 1885: Münsingen. Ulrich Scherer Münsingen = USM. No one was talking about USM Haller at that time, and nobody thought of furniture, but later on.
In the following decades, his sons, Alfred Paul and Robert Schärer founded a building hardware factory and after the Second World War a production of window closure systems and metal components. Even up to this time, the word combination USM Haller was unknown - furniture was still not an issue for the company.
Prof. Fritz Haller was the architect of the new company location of USM in the 1960s. The architecture was modern, modular and practical and found a positive response in specialist circles, architects and trade journals. And this was also the beginning of the furniture and its groundbreaking design.
After the construction of the new factory in which the modular metal building system, created by Fritz Haller, was used for the first time, two further buildings followed on the company premises, an office pavillion and a large office building - the first in Switzerland at all. However: for modern architecture, Paul Scherer and Fritz Haller did not find any furniture that suited them to the new buildings.
Encouraged by the attention of the media, Paul Schärer and Fritz Haller decided to market the steel construction system underlying the architecture of the new building with the new name USM Haller for industrial companies.
The furniture construction system
And that was the hour of the furniture: this was the birth of the furniture system USM Haller. Fritz Haller proposed to "build" a furniture system from the modular concept of the architecture of the production building itself. A whole new design for furniture, borrowed from the architecture of a building. A "basement", which as a USM Haller furniture construction system was to celebrate world-wide successes. They went to work and furnished the new administrative buildings. Again the design was praised in the trade press and published in many places, so that first interested parties were drawn to the design of the new products.
The furnishing of a large office building of the Rothschild bank in Paris was the first major contract for the new furniture construction system. At the same time, the company was at a disadvantage - they were not prepared for a short-term production of 600 workstations.
The furniture construction system has been a part of the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art since 2001 and was included in the collection of the State Museum of Applied Art in 1980.
The useful life of a product is directly linked to the environment. The longer it is used, the less it impacts our environment. For the manufacturer, this responsible approach is a central theme in the production of his furniture right from the start. High-quality materials are environmentally friendly and processed with the latest technology and guarantee an exceptionally long service life of the furniture.
Areas of use
USM Hall furniture is stylish, clear and discreet. This sovereignty stands out in an overloaded time. Beyond the actual destination as office furniture, the furniture is now a sight in almost every conceivable environment. In reception areas, living rooms, bathrooms, children's rooms, home offices, kitchens, cafes, bars, canteens and much more. The intended use is always free. The combination possibilities open up countless possibilities, such as the use as file cabinet, TV board, shoe box, storage of the vinyl collection, kitchen cabinet, toy storage, chest of drawers, bookshelves, decoration element, night table and many more.
