Vitra Home Stories for Autumn 2020

That's what makes autumn 2020 special: be inspired by the new furniture and accessories launched by Vitra.

Vitra Home Collection Autumn 2020

New designer furniture and retro furniture are coming onto the market this year, which can be perfectly combined. Autumn brings design products for the stylish and individual home, office or home office. Internationally renowned designers such as Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec have created something new to make it really cosy, to make sitting mobile or to receive guests in style. Living design legends such as Antonio Citterio, Jasper Morrison and Konstantin Grcic have created new seating furniture. The designs from the 1940s by Jean Prouvé and the designer couple Charles & Ray Eames, who already climbed the Design Olympus with their inventions during their lifetime, are truly retro. Classic new products from Vitra for autumn 2020

The Chaise Tout Bois chair by Jean Prouvé

Retro, i.e. classic furniture newly produced, is the "Chaise Tout Bois" (chair made entirely of wood), which the Frenchman Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) designed in 1941 as the only one of its kind. It is somewhat reminiscent of the classic "Standard", but its base frame had to be replaced by wood due to the lack of metal during the war. The shape of the Chaise Tout Bois takes the human anatomy into account by means of special strength and a well thought-out load profile. After several prototypes of the chair, the 1941 form with oak wood prevailed, and in 1947 Prouvé won the "Meubles de France" competition for the chair. Chaise Tout Bois is available in light oak and dark oak. Prouvé was actually a skilled blacksmith, but worked as an architect and developed new furniture solutions.

The chair for the Plywood Group LCW limited 75th Anniversary Edition by Charles and Ray Eames

Also retro are the LCW chairs for the 75th birthday in limited edition by Charles and Ray Eames, who were pioneers in the 1940s in three-dimensionally shaping laminated wood to create affordable chairs in good design for the post-war world. The precious wood is attached to the base with a combination of rubber and metal (shock mounts), the back legs of which are shorter. The classics of Mid Century Design by Charles (1907-1978) and Ray Eames (1912-1988) will follow as a new edition in late autumn / winter 2020 in walnut or black ash. The Eames' most famous designs include the lounge chair in fine wood and leather and "La Chaise" in fibreglass, already available in the pro office shop.

New products from Vitra in autumn 2020

The Moca chair by Jasper Morrison
Rather inconspicuous and purist is the 2020 "Moca" chair by Jasper Morrison, which is a genuine product of his design philosophy "Super Normal", durable chairs made of high-quality material that never become unfashionable because they do not follow any short-term trend. The Englishman Jasper Morrison (*1959) studied in London and Berlin and founded the design studio Jasper Morrison Ltd. in 1986. The bus stops he designed are an integral part of the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein.

The Grand Relax armchair by Antonio Citterio

Great relaxation is offered by the so called "Grand Relax" by Antonio Citterio (*1950) from 2019. As a luxurious recliner, it offers maximum comfort resulting from the upholstery and the interaction of the parts. High-quality covers in leather or fabric envelop soft cushions; users are guided directly into a resting position by the mechanism integrated into the chair. Seat and backrest are in a synchronous relationship independently of each other and can be locked if desired. On its four-star aluminium base, the recliner can be turned on its own axis. To relax the feet, there is the matching ottoman, which serves as a footrest or separate seat.

The Mariposa Corner sofa by Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby

The Mariposa sofas are softly upholstered throughout and their arm and backrests can be moved continuously. This also includes the 2020 novelty; the corner version "Mariposa Corner" is an extension of the "Mariposa" sofa from 2014 and was designed for other room requirements. The designer sofa comes from the Barber Osgerby architecture and design studio in England. The artists Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby were both born in 1969 and are not only known for thoughtful furniture design, such as the Vitra Tip Ton, but also for good industrial design and architecture.

The Citizen armchair by Konstantin Grcic

The "Citizen" is the new design by cult designer Konstantin Grcic from 2020: The seat of the Citizen hangs on three ropes that allow a slight swinging movement. The backrest, on the other hand, is firmly connected to the steel frame. The sitting sensation is enhanced by the frame, which is designed as a cantilever chair and is mounted on the base frame so that it can rotate. The freely suspended, almost floating seat cushion floats above the base frame. The construction is open, which gives the Citizen an unaffected expression. The armchair is available as Citizen Highback, as a room-shaping lounge chair with high backrest. The Lowback version with the low backrest can also be combined excellently as a group and define entire lounge areas. The upholstery fabric can be selected from an attractive colour palette.

The vases: Vases Découpage by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

The hand dyed, "cut to size" vases, Vases Découpage, with handcrafted expression by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec are compositions of clay with cylinders, plates and sticks; available in three versions, Barre (stick), Disque (disc) and Feuille (leaf). The three designs can also be perfectly combined as a set. Different colours and compositions appear differently unconventional from every angle. The brothers Ronan (* 1971) and Erwan Bouroullec (* 1976) are internationally active in their jointly run design studio in Paris.
