Effectively illuminate living areas

Without artificial light only limited possibilities for work and leisure: that's why the first people used fire. From 1850 onwards, petroleum and gas lamps became established, and the first patents for incandescent lamps were also registered. Thomas Alva Edison is not the only inventor of the light bulb. But he applied for patent number 223898 on January 27, 1880 for his development with a glass bulb and a carbon filament made of bamboo fibers and prevailed over his competitors. Today we know that light influences mood as well as health and gives nature a beat. Without light, we would have no structure. The alternation of brightness and darkness determines our daily routine and thus our lives. Daylight with its high blue content suppresses the production of the sleep hormone melatonin, which keeps us awake and ensures our biorhythm. For these and other reasons, when buying lamps, it is also important to pay attention to the illuminant, which differs in color temperature, brightness and power consumption.

Energy-saving LED instead of incandescent lamp

Ultimately, the desired illuminant must be available; since September 1, 2009, the "incandescent lamp ban" has been in effect with EU Regulation 2009/244/EC, with the aim of reducing energy consumption and lowering CO₂ emissions. In the meantime, so-called "energy-saving lamps" (fluorescent tubes and halogen bulbs) have also been withdrawn from circulation, partly because they contain mercury. These lamps can be replaced by efficient LED lamps, which are now available in high light quality and long life. Metal halide lamps are also energy-saving. The energy consumption of lamps ranges from the highest energy efficiency class A++ to G; the decisive factor is the luminous efficacy, which is measured in lumens per watt (lm/W).

Light sources for the home

The color temperature of a candle appears warm and yellowish to us at 1500 Kelvin, while the blue light of an overcast sky has about 7000 Kelvin. Blue light makes us awake, red-yellow light contributes to relaxation. Brightness is measured in lumens, modern LED lamps emit about 800 lumens, whereas the old incandescent lamp had only 12 lumens. The wattage of a lamp indicates its power consumption. A 60W lamp consumes more electricity than a 40W lamp. LED lights, on the other hand, consume only 5 watts. If you choose a multi-arm chandelier for aesthetic reasons, economical bulbs can keep energy consumption and electricity costs flat. LED bulbs therefore consume little energy because they do not generate heat, their semiconductor crystals glow by being connected to electricity. LEDs are optionally dimmable, smartly controllable depending on the equipment and available in many color variants - homely warm white or bright colors, LED lighting is an all-rounder. LED is the abbreviation for light-emitting diode.

Design lamps for the living area and home office

If you are building a house, please also think about your lighting design - there are also always too few sockets in the wall. If the cable for the floor lamp must be laid through the room, you are annoyed afterwards. Lighting is one of the factors that determines the feel-good factor in a room. The feel-good factor also includes the design of a lamp and whether it emits direct or indirect light. In any case, the light should be glare-free. If you read in the living room or study or work in the kitchen, direct lighting is the right choice. Even if you have established your office in the home - the home office wants to be well lit. The ideal lighting

There is no such thing as an ideal luminaire - it is good to illuminate several areas with different light sources: Background lighting combined with accent lighting and task lighting. The balance of high-contrast and low-contrast light is the best combination for good living. Indirect light is soft and even, while bright light is a perfect complement when working or reading and relieves eye strain. Ideally, some lights have a dimmer to adjust the brightness and positively affect the mood. Indirect lighting is low-contrast and soft and does not dazzle.
