Ergonomics in the office

Ergonomic office furniture has a direct impact on our health, concentration and performance.

Ergonomic workstations

The term ergonomics is a combination of the ancient Greek words 'work' and 'law' and deals with the knowledge of the regularity of human work. The aim of ergonomics is to reduce stress and to arrange the working conditions spatially and temporally in such a way that the working people get tired or sick as little as possible with optimal work results.

In the meantime, almost 20 million employees work mainly at a monitor. The aim is to improve the workplace and human-machine interaction. Legislators have also recognised that the safety and health of monitor workers are particularly at risk if no ergonomic working environment is available. In December 2016, the Federal Ministry of Labour amended the Workplace Ordinance (ArbStättV).

Ergonomics in the workplace

The ergonomic design of the workplace is a complex issue. This includes an appropriate room temperature, little noise, good lighting, legroom, respectful communication and the absence of unpleasant odours, which have a positive effect on positive workplace conditions.

Added to this is the distance between the person and the monitor, the optimised office chair and the correct desk height at the workplace. People want and need to move in order to maintain their health and performance. Pro Office offers optimised office chairs, stools and modern office desk solutions for ergonomic workplace design and adapting the office to the modern world. An ergonomic workplace is not a luxury but a necessity. Unnecessary strain and lack of ergonomics make people ill; according to the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA), damage to the musculoskeletal system is responsible for a quarter of all absences from work. In addition to the well-known symptoms, such as headaches, neck, shoulder or back pain, cardiovascular disorders, ringing in the ears and swallowing difficulties can also be the consequence of poor workplace design.

Loss of performance due to illness, concentration problems and reduced motivation are the result of poor working conditions. A lack of ergonomic workplace equipment causes varying degrees of stress, higher absenteeism, greater susceptibility to errors, lower motivation and higher employee turnover. An investment in ergonomics is a preventive service that prevents typical occupational illnesses and reduces existing ones. Work motivation increases because employees perceive the human aspect and feel valued. Work design and ergonomics in the workplace are also particularly important in terms of extended working life.

People and ergonomics
The ergonomic office swivel chairs should meet all legal requirements and be height-adjustable by means of gas pressure spring and seat suspension, with tiltable, flexible backrest, seat adjustment and breathable upholstery. Pro Office offers modern office swivel chairs featuring state-of-the-art technology from renowned designers. First-class designs combine appearance and functionality to create outstanding office swivel chairs that do not force people into a fixed posture, but ergonomically allow for a back-friendly posture. The spine is supported during work. The components of the office swivel chairs provide more dynamics, physical freedom and movement during work. They ensure that the chair adapts to the user and not vice versa. Mobilization and relaxation are encouraged and fatigue is minimized.

The interaction of functions such as backrest, armrests and seat is implemented by renowned and experienced manufacturers. Employees can easily change their working postures continuously using the latest technology and thus remain mobile, the so-called "movement sitting". The possibilities are many and varied, ranging from leaning back in a relaxed manner to sitting with arms resting. The variety promotes the metabolism and protects the intervertebral discs. The right office swivel chair adapts to the user and his work task and integrates itself optically and spatially into the office situation.

Ergonomic adjustment of office swivel chairs at the workplace

The support of a good office swivel chair is divided into several components. At the optimum seat height, there is an angle of over 90 degrees between the lower leg and the thigh. The feet should touch the floor when sitting and the back should be in contact with the backrest.

As part of the backrest of some office swivel chairs, an integrated lumbar support is offered, which provides special support for the lumbar spine and prevents incorrect posture. Office swivel chairs with seat depth adjustment allow adaptation to body height over the length of the thigh. There should be some space between the front edge of the seat and the calf so that the seat does not touch the hollow of the knee.

The height of the armrests should be adjusted so that the shoulders are horizontal in a relaxed position and the forearms form an angle of at least 90 degrees to the upper arm. The height of the backrest is correct when the lumbar support is at the level of the belt line.
