Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck (b. Jan. 18, 1949 in Paris) grew up, by his own admission, under the desk of his father, who was an aircraft designer. Starck studied at the École Camondo in Paris. After winning the furniture competition "La Vilette" in 1965, he founded a company for his inflatable objects. After a stint as artistic director at Pierre Cardin, he founded Starck Products in 1980. His private life is also turbulent; his five children come from four marriages. Philippe Starck became famous in 1983, when the then French President François Mitterrand had his private residence in the Elysée Palace decorated by the artist and architect. "If there is no human, social or loving vision, a project has no legitimacy to exist," is just one of his famous quotes.

"Subversive, ethical, ecological, political, humorous, that's how I see my job as a designer."

Starck's career contains close to 10,000 creations. His mission is to improve the lives of as many people as possible, and that mission should be shared by everyone in the world: "No one has to be a genius, but everyone has to participate." Starck describes himself as a citizen of the world with a humanistic vision of an equal planet. Objects should be primarily useful before they are beautiful. Starck is passionate about new lifestyles, the intelligence of utility - and the usefulness of intelligence. From this philosophy came the design of furniture, vibrant hotels, spectacular yachts, wind turbines and an electric car. Philippe Starck stands for democratic ecology that is action-oriented and respects both human and natural heritage; examples include the Elise recycled bucket, the Zartan chair made from recyclable plant material, and affordable as well as adaptable high-tech prefabricated houses, P.A.T.H. houses. The Prefabricated Accessible Technological Home are triple-glazed passive houses that provide for the use of renewable energy such as solar thermal and / or photovoltaic. Starck's concept of democratic design are mass-produced consumer goods that can be produced cheaply with good quality.

Well-known brands - furniture, technology and accessories

Probably the most famous accessory is the one-piece lemon squeezer Juicy Salif from 1990, which the designer Philippe Starck created for the Italian cult manufacturer Alessi. Juicy Salif is considered a design classic, even though, unlike other Starck products, it has more artistic value than functional qualities. As a sculpture in the kitchen, the spacey citrus juicer scores points all the way; with this item, beauty clearly takes precedence over utility. From the field of technology, the motor yacht A, the motorcycle Motó 6.5 by manufacturer Aprilia, an ambidextrous computer mouse for Microsoft, faucets for Hansgrohe SE, bathtubs for Hoesch, the headphones Zik for Parrot are considered outstanding. From the field of fashion, the Eyes glasses by Alain Mikli and shoe collections for Puma are worth mentioning.

Starck Furniture

Designs by Philippe Starck that never get old: The stackable Dr. No chair with its comfortable seat shell is one of Kartell's classics and can be used both indoors and outdoors. The transparent armchair Louis Ghost for the manufacturer Kartell brings the design principle of reduction to the point. The label XO Design also inspires with innovative products - such as the multifunctional stool Bubu. In 2019, the so-called AI chair was created with the help of American 3D software experts, a chair that humans and artificial intelligence created together. The goal was to use minimal materials with maximum stability. The organic shape and ergonomic principles are somewhat reminiscent of the Masters chairs, which won design awards in two years, the Good Design Award in 2010 and the reddot design award in 2013. In 1999, Philippe Starck was Designer of the Year. Discover now the design classics Dr. No, Masters and Louis Ghost - also as children's chair Lou Lou Ghost - in your pro office store.
