Black – classic, elegant, luxurious

Colors have a special effect on our minds. Black plays a special role in this

The effect of colors

Colors have a strong effect on our soul and also influence the body, for example, on blood pressure, when you literally see red or freeze because the walls are painted blue. Each color consists of wavelength and energy, which are transferred to the human body. In color light therapy (chromotherapy), people are exposed to colored light of a certain wavelength to heal body and soul. Color theory also plays a role in the teachings of Feng Shui. The words “Feng” and “Shui” mean “wind” and “water”. The idea behind the Asian teachings is to allow the life energy, the Chi, to flow unhindered through the rooms in order to maintain the well-being and strength of the inhabitants. In Europe, the Swiss psychologist Max Lüscher (1923-2017) studied the effect of colors, and his color theory from 1947 is still valid today. The biggest advantage of black: it highlights fine contours and emphasizes slender lines.

Black as the night – classic design rooms

Black is the absence of light when no color stimuli reach the eye or when light is completely absorbed. In art, black is not considered a color at all, but in printing technology, like gray or white, it is considered an achromatic color. In our culture, black stands for mourning, standstill, hopelessness and death, but also for elegance, renewal, power, luxury and dignity. Because of its exclusive effect, black is also referred to as the classic color of artists and designers. In certain subcultures such as Gothic or Punk, it is considered a symbolic color.

Ideas for high-quality furnishings

Black is classic and brings style and a touch of drama to your home or office. Rooms with high ceilings also look good when only individual surfaces are painted dark. Expressive furniture or accessories can be showcased in front of a black wall. Combine them with classic gold, silver, brass and copper tones, perhaps a wire chair or metal-colored wallpaper and textiles. Metals reflect light and radiate warmth. If you like tone-on-tone, you can combine black walls with black or gray furniture; if you prefer contrasts, you can add white, soft pastels or bright colors. Natural materials such as wood go extremely well with black. The French designer Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) was already using this combination in his industrial designs in the 1940s. Alternatively, you can arrange wooden furniture with a Scandinavian flair; the black background makes the wood positively glow. Rough textiles such as wool or fine materials such as leather go well with this. Black walls and accessories painted with a matt color achieve a special effect.
